Are Soul Mates Real?

Our culture has ingrained the idea of soulmates, which is frequently shown in fairy tales and motion pictures. However, a recent survey conducted in the United States among around 15,000 persons found that 60% of them think soulmates exist. Does this concept, however, have any application in actual relationships?

Though modern dating culture romanticizes the idea of soulmates, relationship specialists advise against following what they refer to as the “soulmate model of marriage.”

Some experts counter that seeing marriage through the prism of a soulmate could result in inflated expectations. Sometimes, trying to grow a relationship is undermined by believing in a predestined match. There may be a propensity to give up more quickly when things get difficult because one assumes that if a relationship is meant to be, it will inevitably work out.

Further investigation into this topic was conducted by a recent study that included 615 couples from the US and Canada. It came to the conclusion that strong bonds are not primarily fueled by fate or strong feelings. Rather, strong relationships are created by values like honesty, endurance, and working together to make the relationship stronger.

So, instead of  focusing on finding your soulmate, experts suggest these 5 things to build a healthy relationship.

  • Don’t Treat Relationships Like Shopping: Relationships require constant work and steadfast dedication; they are more than just exchanges of goods and services.
  •

Be Realistic: Understand that love changes over time with every shared experience and cooperative project.

  • Understand Love: Recognize that lasting love is more than just passing feelings; it is nourished by conscious actions and decisions.
  • Date Well: Prioritize developing fair partnership dynamics, having aligned values, and developing good communication skills when you’re dating.
  • Learn From Breakups: Accept the lessons learned from the past while holding onto the hope that future relationships may materialize.

Remember that soulmates are created, not discovered. People who choose each other out, work together to improve their relationship, and never give up on one another develop a strong tie. Focus on being a supporting partner and building a resilient relationship instead of waiting for fate to step in.

Finding your true love may be alluring, but in the end, maintaining a healthy and long-lasting relationship is more satisfying.
